SOLUTION FOCUSED LEGAL THINKINGLEGALASSISTNI was established by Laura McKnight in early 2017 in response to the Statutory Registration Scheme for all Providers of Publicly Funded Legal Services. Laura recognised that the Scheme posed further significant changes to the already somewhat fluid legal aid system in Northern Ireland. She felt that, with both her experience in private practice and her detailed knowledge of the Scheme, she, along with her team, could educate and guide the solicitor profession of Northern Ireland through these changes, allowing them to concentrate on their fee-earning activities.

Laura McKnight LL.B CPLSLaura achieved a Bachelors degree in Law & Economics from the University of Ulster in 2003 and then completed her professional legal qualification in 2005 at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Queen's University, Belfast. She was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in Northern Ireland that year. Laura worked in private practice for several years and then in a number of public sector legal positions. She established LEGALASSISTNI in early 2017.
